 Search Engine Market Share

Many search engines get their results by turning to third-party "search providers" to "power" their listings while very few use their own technology. The chart below shows the share of searches on a search provider basis.

  Search Engine Market Share

The breakdown structure is clearly depicted on the graph.

The graph exhibits the shared percentage of Google and AOL including the share of Excite Network. This is because iWon, MyWay and My Web Search all provide Google results by default.
At Excite, Meta search results that include Google and others are shown. It is impossible to separate out any non-Google powered search from the Excite Network in the figures given. As a result, Google gets more credit, but apparently ranges result only to 1-2 percent.

The graph shows a combined share of searches at Yahoo and MSN Search.

This area in the graph again depicts combined share of searches at InfoSpace and Lycos. InfoSpace runs meta search engines, which get search results from a variety of search providers while Lycos.com primarily provides access to paid inclusion listings from LookSmart, unpaid listings from Yahoo and paid listings from Google and Lycos's own internal program.
Lycos-owned HotBot primarily provides access to Yahoo powered listings. Some additional "Mix" traffic is likely contained within the other slice, but this is impossible to break out.

The percentage of the result displayed on the graph is the sum total of searches at Ask. Ask lists only unpaid results while Google provides paid listings to Ask, which in turn receives this share, as well.

Others include those shares of searches from other sites that use their own technology or editorial processes. The search result includes some share that belongs to the other provider categories.
